Yeah, it would probably be too quick to accept as an apology, since all I know is what he did, but not who he is as a person.

If your response to "Hey can I jerk off right now?" is "lol yeah, sure", then I can't say I care much about the incidents themselves, but I struggle to understand the mindset of someone who would actually masturbate publicly.

@mown

public masturbation is far from the weirdest fetish in existence

He sounds a little (okay more than a little) creepy and I am just reading about this for the first time now but it doesn't seem like the things he did were grossly out of line, although it seems like they probably had more far reaching consequences than they might have otherwise had because he was famous and in a position of power and not just some weirdo and i guess he is saying that he has come to acknowledge that in his apology which is a nice perspective.

I imagine there are far more terrible things happening in hollywood than some socially maladjusted comedian asking you uncomfortable questions.

Not to say that what he did wasn't bad or that i understand the perspective of the victims, or that he should be forgiven by anybody.

there's having a fetish, and then there's having it override common sense
you don't just whip out your wiener and become a grunting semen fountain after having talked for 15 minutes, surely you understand that people will find that repulsive

couldn't have said it better myself

and @rag i think yeah like in terms of "horrifying" stuff Louis CK isn't that far along the scale. but after the weinstein stuff like a month and a half ago there's this conversation happening nationally about, like, "how do we feel about the role of sex in our ostensibly non-sexual power structures" and this folds super neatly under that umbrella

maybe he thought that he was a lot more attractive and desirable than he actually was

pick a random attractive and wealthy female celebrity. if i had the opportunity to talk to them and 15 minutes into the conversation they propositioned me then i would probably have no problems with that

the issue here is that "comfortable yes" and "uncomfortable but being forced to say yes for fear the repercussions" looks very similar when you either don't have the proper social skills to distinguish them, or you delude yourself into thinking its one thing when its really the other

for sure. and i mean it circles back to the culture, always, and what we teach our kids. speaking as an American we're taught from a young age that "power is attractive, power is sexy". but maybe it's just "power is coercive, power is intimidating, power is an implication and a threat". what's good is that this all renews conversations about consent and what Good Sex looks like and what consent is and is not

if the dialogue happens right after you bring someone to your hotel room then you might be on different pages. That said, not being able to witness the situations ourselves, its impossible to dissect the social dynamics precisely.

talking about consent is good because i feel like it is probably a more complicated dynamic than a lot of people like to think it is

i feel like NGA will probably not be hit very hard by net neutrality in the near future. I would guess that larger services and censorship-prone material would be hit harder in the aftermath.

I think that is not the case. We could see premiums, reduced performance, or even a whitelisting-access system against browsing networks that don't have the money to pay off an internet provider.

Reduced performance is probable i think, but a whitelisting-access system seems a little over the top to me.

Marginally reduced traffic speeds aren't the end of the world though.

I'd say you should've hosted the forum outside the US, but that wouldn't help the large number of forumites trapped in the US.
It seems like internet policy is the only thing that can actually unite american citizens to take a stand. Previous attempts to mess with digital policy have been stopped by public outcry, so you have a good chance here. Best of luck. I'd write to my congressman, but I don't have one.
