Looks like the uncommon from that cycle they were talking about in the story was a Vampire Wizard and now that it is revealed, the rumor around the web is that the art is a pretty good match for vampires in the Sengir line.

Crying.
Whoa. :ookay:

So epic. Brilliant artwork. I'd actually expect that spell to be :u: flavourwise, though. Given the mechanics, :u::w: would have been optimal. But I'll take it in :w: too.

I hate everything about Mairsil and Edgar :ahem:

Wow that is not at all how I pictured him yet I'll take it.

Kinda sad he's not going to be 5c, but I'm opening to see what mechanics they DO give to him.

I was disappointed when Edgar didn't look like an old man, because he would've been one when he became a vampire, but now that I think about it, he's a danged vampire, of course he wouldn't look old.

So, Mairsil's card has been spoiled: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/ar ... 2017-08-10

Well, it'll take me a bit to wrap my brain around the fact that they didn't go the five colour 'rainbow mage' route with him and focused on his personality instead, but I guess by the time the deck comes out, I'll be okay with it. At least they really made an effort to capture his role in the story with a flavourful and interesting card. And you could even argue that it's Mairsil when he's just about to imprison Ith and that his access to all colours of mana only came from his stealing Ith's power, so the colours would fit

I'm still not a fan of the artwork, though. His clothes are true to the description in the book, but apart from those, he just looks like a tramp. And he's missing the mustache he has in the book. I just generally imagined him as more charismatic and all that, not like a drug addict with greasy hair.

I really have to praise the preview article itself, Chas Andres really knows what he's talking about, and it's great that it'll update many people on an amazing bit of old lore. They should let that guy do the story podcasts instead of Alison. I'm sure he wouldn't be anywhere near as unprepared and uninformed...

One quibble with the Mairsil article:

When the Rag Man found Jodah, he was hardly a 'powerful mage'. He was a bare apprentice who couldn't tell the difference between red and white mana.

Unfortunately these podcast aren't helpful at all... it seems they are deciding what to say on the fly... they spoke about the lights going off and kept it in the podcast... We want some information on the lore of the commander decks, not chit chat between coworkers... -.-'

He was a major villain during The Dark. Basically, he took over a magic school, locked his former boss in a cage, and drained him of all his mana. Later he got "killed" but his soul ended up in that ring he's wearing. There was a bunch of other stuff and in the end, the ring ended up on Jaya Ballard's hand and he started trying to take over her mind and make her kill Jodah. Then she became a 'Walker and scoured his spiritual self from existence.

Mairsil is just my kind of commander. I love building janky combos with insane card choices. Gonna include a lot of :q: options and flicker effects, of course... A few ways of going straight infinite turns but in the mean time might as well do insane. Like caging a Licid to turn into an aura and dodge removal. He won't have any "Enchanted creature does whatever" abilities though.

Considering I'm not too big a fan of vampires going Mardu, I'm quite fond of Mathas, Fiend Seeker. I'm not even sure he'd be a great commander for a vampire tribal deck, but he might make for a fun political deck. And I'm instantly buying that he's Mardu-coloured just by his name, artwork and flavour text, a thing that can't be said about Edgar Markov... My bet is that he's from Ixalan.

The cool thing about that Mathas guy is that he costs only three mana, so I might give him a shot in Tiny Lead- *gets hit on the head and is dragged out of the room*

It's kind of like a "pretender to the throne" reference. He deposed his boss, the actual head of the magic school and usurped his position.

He is a pretender to Ith's role, as a usurper.

Yeah, hey Ethan! *waves*

As I said, that preview article is really good, people should just go and read it. I mean, really, good articles on older lore are a rarity these days, so this one deserves some attention.
