Let's get to know each other a little bit!

I'd like you to name nine Magic cards that mean something to you in terms of how you came around to the M:EM.

First, tell us about 3 cards that are M:EMories of you as a Magic: The Gathering player.

Next, tell us about 3 cards that are M:EMories of you as a Vorthos.

Finally, tell us about 3 cards that are M:EMories of you as a M:EMber or an M:EM fan!

As Nasperge might say, let's see what the cards tell about us!

I don't? I mean, beside the assonance with your username...?
(IMHO putting a dramatic flavor text in the following edition was a mistake, though :D)

@Raven It's worse than I remember, though still better than most of my other contemporary pieces and a little excusable as a FoaF tale, but I found it

Planeswalker's Scorn. I first got into the real stories with, at similar times, the Armada comics and the Tempest Storybook insert. Then middle school hit. At the same time, in 2001, the WotC forums first opened. Long story short, I was feeling villainous, and took up the banner of a powerful, clever villain with a tragic backstory. I also misspelled the name like a doofus.

yeah... I know that feel.

So, I've been turning it over in my head a lot, and while I certainly use the cards a lot in my stories, there's not much inspiration that I directly draw from them, so my MEMbership contribution is... a little wanting, but there is one that I have to add:

Fire Diamond
a card I've never directly used. But Orcish has.
When he first showed up with Small Magic, it all centered around a Heartstone, which had some pretty exact ties to the lore, and in general, with how strongly important they were, it seemed inadvisable to use. So, we offered alternatives to help our fledgling writer. My suggestion was the Fire Diamond, and ultimately it found its way into Beryl's tale, and consequently, we gained our good buddy Orcish.

I'm a little ashamed that I don't remember this, but what became of the Fire Diamond that the Heartstone became? Does Beryl still have it?

Given that I had to look this up myself, I think you're okay. :)

Last we saw of the Fire Diamond was in "Reclamation," when Beryl gave it to Astria:

Quote:
Beryl shook her head. Then she held the fire diamond out to Astria, and motioned for her to take it.

“Here,” she said. “This doesn’t really belong to me, and I don’t need it anymore. It doesn’t belong to you, either, but I get the sense that you need it more than I do.”

Astria started to reach out to take the crystal, but hesitated with her hand halfway there, wondering what unspoken price her sister expected in return.

As though she could read Astria’s thoughts, Beryl said: “There’s no catch. Think of it as a goodwill gesture – provided, that is, you think having this thing is worth dealing with the trouble that seems to follow it around.”

Astria held her hand out, and Beryl dropped the fire diamond into it. Astria closed her fingers around the little crystal – it was warm to the touch, and she could feel the mana waiting inside it, ready to do her bidding.

She slipped the gem into the scrip she wore around her waist.

“Thank you,” she said.

Where it has gotten to, we don't actually know. Presumably, Astria still had it when she died, but anything could have become of it since then.

The uncomfortable truth is that The Shifter probably has it now, given what we learned from Antony.

Okay, this took a while. Partly due to other distractions, but partly because I hadn't thought in such terms before.

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty unique way to learn a little about each other!

It took me a long time to figure out how Phasing works, and truth be told, I've played with it so infrequently, I'm still not entirely sure I've got it!

It feels like each rules manager has fiddled with whether leaves-play and/or enters-play triggers notice permanents phasing in and out, and there are plenty of other interesting corner cases, but the basic gameplay isn't that complex. Insanely bad, yes, but not hard to get used to. Then again, I understood banding, too.

Oh, I didn't know you were hanging around the mothership back then! Did you ever swing by F&S and say hi? Or did that not happen until you came by here?

No, sorry. I almost never looked at the forums; in fact, I only really recall posting in a single thread. My trip here was fairly roundabout.
