The problem with yugioh right now is that the top 5 archytypes are burning abyss, qliphort, shaddoll, satellarknight, and nekroz.

Burning abyss and Satellarknight are the rank 3 and rank 4 xyz spam decks that came out to try and battle pendulum monsters. Basically, xyz monsters have become "too good" due to power creep and because of this these decks are just able to wipe the floor with most lower rank decks. Burning abyss also has a lot of really good effects amongst its own cards (within archtype), while satellarknight xyz archtype specific monsters are borked.

Qliphort monsters are the pendulum deck. They are able to....... basically they can summon 5 monsters every turn and keep doing so no matter what you do if you aren't able to destroy their pendulum scales. Even if you are able to destroy their pendulum scales it's really easy for them to get another one due to how searchable the freaking deck is. They use these 5 monsters to get out high rank xyz monsters AND as normal summon fodder. The thing that makes this deck absolutely broken is that if you satisfy the proper condition, monsters of a lower rank or level cannot use their effects on them.

Shaddoll is the anti-meta control deck that ..... it's as annoying as ****.

And nekroz is the ritual deck where they can use their extra deck as ritual fodder.

^^ Because of how good these decks are and how they all work and how they counter each other, yugioh is literally starting to become one of those games that is just power-creeped to hell and back, where going first gives you a stupidly high advantage vs going second. Too many tutors in too many top decks with too many borked effects that just execute lesser decks.

In addition, the cheapest tourny deck before we get WAY too far down the spectrum, down at rank 14-ish right now?, is heros at about $200.

yugioh seems like a poorly designed game

Yugioh was well designed towards the beginning of its life cycle. The issue is that it only has 1 eternal format with a banned list, so in order to get people to buy cards they power creep the hell out of each new set. Now, it is a very poorly designed game, because they've basically thrown out all the gating that used to keep certain degenerate rules in check.

Pretty much. It's more a case of the developers/designers/whatever don't really think things through. Nothing cycles out of yugioh (well barely anything does and even then it occasionally cycles back in) and it's power creep has been turned up to eleven. The previous 'god' cards never go away so all they can do is keep cranking thing up until the average card either reads like a dictionary or is so hilariously simply worded that it's open to all sorts of abuse. You'll notice a lot of cards that were banned for being part of a game-breaking combo were often released several sets apart; that's what happens when the entire back catalog is open for use. It's impossible for the developers to check every card interaction but you'll be damned sure the player base will.

Basically it's a competitive mess.

TL;DR - See jacks answer.

Hell. Yugioh doesn't work because there's nothing to stop you from summoning 3 or 4 things and/or casting 20 or so spells on turn 1 (i.e. what I meant by lack of gating). Despite all it's flaws, mana in mtg allows for things like divination and rise from the grave to be possible. In Yugioh, the equivalents are permabanned.

Also (Mind you, I haven't played in forever, so take this with a grain of salt) the combat system heavily favors the attacker. If I get some beast with 3000 atk out, you damn well better be able to match that or have a trap card ready, because, unlike in Magic where you could play a 2/2, eat 4 damage, then play a second 2/2 and block, in yugioh there's nothing to stop me from immediately obliterating any weaker monster you play (Granted, they do have ways to mitigate this, but if you don't happen to draw any, good luck).

It's actually gotten worse than that. The amount of grave recursion available has gotten to the point where Raigeki is no longer forbidden-worthy. *shudders*
