I think I was the only one that had a bad time, and y'know I looked back - if I'd have done double elimination your's would've actually made it to 3rd - because at least up until those last two games (right before I wrote it up), going down cards or not, it was winning mostly.

And I've been having a ton of fun with it after fiddling with the land a bit (don't worry, I kept your ruins!). Just finished one with a board of 4/4 servos, and another with disciple/bontu and a persistant enthusiast

Haha...just had ruins and stockpile show up together :D PAYOFF

Sweet cool to hear, would love to see an updated build. It is fun when it works.

Hmmmnnn interesting card choices... maybe we could brake something other than a card a mechanic or some other restrictions, Hell we can go janky tribals.
On other news I think I can play a few games....
So lets start with
Fruit Ninja
Vs rakdos removal
Hes got, murder, fatal push, Yahennis expertise, Harnessed lighting!!
I’m out of creatures and hes got ballista ans Chandra of defiance
I kill the ballista and lets see if I can win this ... is far atm
Languish, another harnessed another ballista and dynabolt...
No cards... but im at 16 life yay!
Here comes Kalithas!! Gume a break and never!!! LOL
Please make it stop opponent!!
chandra ultimates finally and we are dead
5-2 Beleted

Next Wintervoid
Vs R36 grixis control
This should be fun
I bounce his Kefnet, he kills my Saheli
I drop Nahiri... I get greedy and don’t ultimate her when I had the chance, he kills her my reflector and my displacer... I got him at 1 atm but the board is kinda looked
Who plays renovated faith!!
This got out of hand... and I’m flooding
sorry Wintervoid
This must be the 1 out of 10 games Kefnet is useful
Couple of turns later we are dead
5-2 Beleted

Last game with Rakdrazi
Vs r39 golgari ramp
Too slow
Scrappy, Copter, reshaper, Glroty bringer and Chandra + Ud FTW... yeah!

6-1
That would be all for tonight’s

Oof, that's rough. Nice effort but you should have taken a mulligan on that hand. No early creatures is suicide.

Yeah, prolly. I just hate throwing away a 3-lander under any circumstances and especially with land light decks. That’s just begging the shuffler for a mull-to-3-oh-fuggit situation. I was too beat to get any more games in last night but I should get a few in today.

I almost think a short mulligan/lines of play guide would be good to include with at least some of the less intuitive decklists - a lot of these I don't think I quite figured out till mid-end of my series (and arguably am still not there on Mowie's :)). For instance, just warming up with Nomad's I think I preferred it be 2 land and 4 is about right out (unless cryptbreaker is there). I even had several 1 lands with multiple 1 drops work out fine. Part of the mad genius with it is there's so much discarding, low to the ground, and being mono I think that deck is more about the pieces you've got than the lands (outside of 0 obviously), but that's a lot different than the approach with most decks i'm new too (for me at least).

Yeah, this is well observed and spot on. I think I mentioned land in my notes somewhere in the thread, but I should have sent that along with the deck list to Flaky so it made the OP.

The thing that makes low curve aggro like this work is the effective card advantage gained by not playing land. Where regular decks want a land every second card (3 in opening hand, curving out to 6 on time), this wants them every 3rd (2 to start, hit the third on time, getting the fourth t6 but likely t5 if needed with all the card draw here). Every land in hand or on the board that isn't actively being used is one less threat you could have to win with before the Opp stabilizes. So knowing that drawing into land is most likely going to happen, I'd only keep a 3 land opener if the pieces there were strong and created immediate pressure, cause I know I'm likely going to run into a dead draw a turn earlier. Otherwise I'd take a shot at 6 cards for sure.

Ok, trying bzzt’s list now.

It clears the AI both times, tho not without effort. (Which means every deck cleared both AI warmups.). Let’s see how it does on the ladder.

Game 1 vs R26 Izzet Prowess: Win!
Kinda surprised me, actually, because I got a rough start. Going second, I mulled a 3 lander with NO early plays (like 5 was my cheapest spell) into a dodgy 2 lander with Wilds, Chapel, Rallier, SNS, Stockpile, Tracker, and Arrogance. Lets hope I top some mana! T1 he plays land. I top Narnam and play Wilds getting a forest. T2 he plays land and I top Cataclysmic Gearhulk and play Narnam. He Twinbolts it. T3 he plays land and passes. I top Hub and drop it, playing Stockpile. T4 he plays Abbot revealing a tapland but he plays a basic from his hand instead. Maybe he’s holding up a 2 mana counter or something? Idk. Top Rallier 2 and try Tracker, expecting it to eat a bolt. But it sticks! T5 he plays the 5 mana djinn that has a mass prowess effect (Soulblade Djinn?) but doesn’t attack. I top Liberator and play it after swinging with Tracker (he takes). T6 he plays Chandra’s Ignition on his Abbot, maybe thinking Soulblade would survive? It doesn’t but my Tracker has Stamina and comes back. He takes me to 12 tho. I top a land and play it and swing, cracking the clue for Rallier 3 and a servo token. Opp plays another Djinn. I top LRH and swing with Tracker. Opp goes to 9. Then I sac the servo scrying another SNS to the topdeck and play Rallier, getting Wilds (shoulda gotten Liberator - just tired of feeling choked with the mana). Opp swings with Djinn (8) and plays Bully. I top SNS and swing with Tracker and Rallier. He takes. I realize a moment too late that SNS would have been lethal! It’s been a long day and I’m def not sharp right now... I’ll count this a win even if he kills me next turn. I crack Wilds and Rallier, getting Wilds back again, plus my free servo. Opp plays Claustrophobia on my untapped Rallier boosting his damage to huge. But he can’t get rid of a servo so he swings with all and I chump all but 5 from the Djinn (3). He plays Jessian and concedes. Whew!

Game 2 vs R37 4C Control: Lose!
This was long and unpleasant so I’m gonna be lazy and cliffnotes it. I kept a lousy hand because 3 land. Over the course of the game I play Liberator twice (bounce), Rallier once (with no value), SNS once and Kalitas once. I get stuck at 4 land for a while and don’t have the double G for either of the Evolutions I drew or the double B for Kalitas till pretty late. Opp takes his time and Radiant Flames after I play Rallier. I try to rescue with SNS but he responds with Magma Spray. After that he drops a Torrential and whales on me while I’m waiting for my fifth land. He has a Fumarole to help speeding things up but accidentally forgets to activate it pre declare attackers strp when I’m at 6 so I spare him the trouble and concede. The game was over long before then anyway. I had 2 Arrogance and Cataclysmic in hand but they were not the answer to that situation.

Game 3 vs R20 5C Walkers: Lose!
So my first hand is 2 land, Map, Greenwarden, LRH, and Stamina x2. I decide to learn from last game and mull this time. No lander. 1 lander. No lander. 1 land +1 Map and 2 2-drops. I hate the shuffler.
Cliffnotes again because this one was even more painful and waaaaaaay longer than it needed to be. My opp was kinda... idk, stupid? Anyway, he builds up a massive board state with Tracker, Oaths, PWs, tokens... but is too scared of my servo token and Liberator and whatever combat thricks he thinks I might be holding to press his advantage and lets me drop Cataclysmic. Not only that but he keeps OoN out of OoN, OoC, and OoL, despite having a rock solid mana base, a PLANT TOKEN over a 6/5 Tracker, and... well Jace wasn’t a bad choice, but DUDE! A few turns later he’s dominating with big Lili, Jace, Nahiri, Gideon, Sandwurm Convergence, and a good body of tokens plus his Tracker is back. Yet my life totals are unscathed! I sac the Gearhulk with SNS to trim the board again and he makes better choices this time, keeping Nahiri, Tracker, and Convergence. Fast forward 5-6 turns and I’ve Dusked and played a few little things and he’s built back up with little Gideon, Chandra Torch, Arlinn, Sorin, and lots of tokens. He finally starts attacking. Last turn I’m at 6 with just a Greenwarden, one untapped land, and Stockpile. He plusses flipped Arlinn to give his horde trample. Good. Get it over wi- plusses Chandra for 2 damage. Fine. Now just atta- turns Gideon into a 4/4. Just- plays green Roil enchant that makes tokens. Really?! Ok now- plusses Sorin revealing flip Lili. Peace, bro. I’m out.

Ok. That’s 2 losses BUT... I def shoulda mulled the first game even if the shuffler woulda just raped me after (like it always does - see game 2) and the shuffler royally screwed me game 2 (see game 2) so I’m doing a bonus round to see if it can go 2-2.

Game 4 vs R29 White Weenie: ...
I’m first and mull a bad 2 lander into a slow 3-lander with EW, Plains, Swamp, Stockpile, Tracker, and Dusk x2. I play land, he plays Expedition Envoy. I play land and Stockpile. He plsys... nothing. He chanced a 1-lander! Even so he gets 3 hits in with Envoy before my board state starts to take off 5-6 turns in he concedes after STILL not finding a land. Not the most glamorous win, but it counts!

I think maybe I should hold off till tomorrow to play more. I’m clearly fried. >_<

Guys, it's January 4th and I haven't even touched this pile of piles. I don't think I'm going to be able to judge this round. I've been so busy with some nice ladies from Canada Revenue Agency asking me all kinds of questions about my villa.

Besides, now that any rabble can be a judge, it's just not the exclusive ego-stroking exercise that I need.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing who wins and who loses, and hope to see someone choosing a really hard card to break for the next round. Fingers crossed for Undercity Troll!

Ok I’m finishing this
Bzzt vs R33
Ok opponent was playing jank
we played like a boss but two things happen in this game that have never happened to me, first I ultimate llittle Nissa FTW and second, I had my opponent at -20 but that filthy Gideon emblem prevent him from dying.
I also think most people understimates this deck... It can come out of some of the most strange board states.
6-1

Rakdrazi next
Close game vs Boros R34
I Made a mistake and pay the ultimate price for it Rakdrazi falls 6-2

So we got a winner
Congrats BZZT extrange funky deck... but it performed Flaky must be proud!

Bzzt vs r40 RDW
To fast, fury blade and 2 tempers and mascarade delivers the funal blow...
So a both decks tie
Ok so scores
Tesla fruit engine 5-2
Wintervoid 5-2
Mowie´s Cervix 1-2
Rakdrazi 6-2
Scrappy 3-2
Bzzt 6-2

So Tesla
Build + Performance 5 (one point for each win)
Enjoy: 3/5 It felt kinda meh
Break card: 2/5
Total score: 10

Wintervoid:
Build +performance: 5
Enjoy: 5/5
Break Card: 1/3 after I lost I had an epiphany and swap LRH for Essence flux and the deck got a lot better :P
Total Score: 11

Mowie
Build +performance: 1
Enjoy: 4/5 I did enjoy this deck and before the official trials it performed quite alright
Break Card: 2/3
Total Score: 7

Rakdrazi
Build +performance: 6 + 1 for the tie
Enjoy: 5/5 I really liked this deck -shame on you Barns-
Break Card: 2/3
Total Score: 14

Scrappy
Build +performance: 3
Enjoy: 3/5 I wanted that this one lasted a bit longer so I think I will give it a go at your latest review ;)
Break Card: 2/3 not particularly broken
Total Score: 8

Bzzt
Build +performance:6 + 1 for the tie
Enjoy: 3/5 not so crazy about how long the games go, but the deck has tools
Break Card: 3/3
Total Score: 13

Ok so my points goes like this

Jose:2

Exactly! He’s our Simon Cowell!

I think I’m the only one still judging at this point, right? Nomad, Barney, Cucho, bzzt, and Wintervoid all posted results and no one else is going to?

I’ll try to squeeze a few games in tonight.

Thanks! I also appreciate your recordings. It's interesting actually watching other people playing the same decks.

I ended up feeling like Scrappy Stamina really wasn't aggressive enough. I think the Cryptbreakers are awesome but kind of fight against a proper aggro game plan. I pulled them and started thinking about how aggressive I could be at 1CMC, which led me to Thornbow Archers and Bomats. That in turn led to Hazoret replacing Bontu, cause what the deck is doing lends itself more to discard than sacrifice, plus she's faster. So technically it's "Grixis" now:

Scrappier Stamina
Creatures (26)
2 x  Bomat Courier
4 x Thornbow Archer
2 x  Dread Wanderer
3 x  Reaver Drone
2 x  Asylum Visitor
2 x  Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
2 x  Scrapheap Scrounger
2 x  Prized Amalgam
3 x  Haunted Dead
3 x  Bone Picker
1 x Hazoret the Fervent

Spells (15)
3 x  Fatal Push
2 x Sinister Concoction
4 x  Supernatural Stamina
1 x  Heart of Kiran
2 x  Smuggler's Copter
2 x  Key to the City
1 x  Aethersphere Harvester

Land (19)
14 x  Swamp
2 x  Dragonskull Summit
2 x  Smoldering Marsh
1 x Aether Hub

I had a Throne in there but felt like I needed a second Concoction for the discard outlet. I miss it, and almost wonder if I should replace the Harvester with it. Having no 3 drops is kind of nice honestly. I'm not sure about the land, whether it's good as is, or whether I should add another Hub at the expense of either a Swamp or a Marsh. More ladder testing needed, but this build feels more right to me than the original.

I'm 10-1 on the ladder with this now, and it feels so good! I think this may be what I've been looking for in all my duels aggro pursuits over the last couple years. Sorry I couldn't figure it out for you all in time for this contest, it's a freaking joy to play. Kept a one lander with just a Hub to see what would happen, missed T2 land drop, still beat Superfriends (wouldn't recommend that, but it's possible). Saw another Superfriends, hit sweepers turns 3 5 and 7, still won. It just goes so fast and keeps coming back from the dead. What a blast.

I'm going to have to try the tweaks - it seems nuts to me that you'd be able to cast Hazoret off of 5R with any kind of regularity, but now I'm real curious...just drawing through fast enough for that to work?

Yeah, the extra draw helps, and I seem to run into a source fairly frequently. If you're stuck it's just a discard target; you don't want to get too attached with this build. Holding the land and playing a surprise Haz out of a mono black deck is hilarious though.

It's possible that it would be better as my Throne (or maybe Yahenni? I really would like to keep the creature count up), but I tried it cause I was already running the red for the Bomats and I haven't been disappointed yet.

What you and Nomad discussed earlier was either dead on or close from what I can tell (though obviously I kept ruins as 1 of my colorless).

I also ended up circling all the way back around on the hubs. I think with the duals in there they actually play much better and in the end make it over 1 swamp/2 plains.

So right now I'm at:
-2abbey
-2plains
-1swamp

+4 dual
+1 EW

Actually, that's a dirty, dirty lie. It's not a wilds, it's a map. But it should be a wilds, and I understand that.

Ok, I finished 2-2 with bzzt’s list. I’ll do the write ups later and tally some scores. Hopefully I can announce the winner a day early!

Here are my scores and critiques:

Josenshu’s Electric Cars:
Effectiveness: 2.5/5
It went 2-2 on the ladder, tying bzzt’s for third. Game recaps on page 5.
Build: 3/5
Low to the ground, potentially explosive, but lacking effective top end options to bust through big blockers makes the late game hazardous. Also, the land count seemed high for the curve.
Card Breakage: 3.5/5
First Strike and energy etb effects both give SNS a bit more value than just rescuing creeps and pumping for extra damage. Hellion seems especially fun to SNS tho I never got to pull it off.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 1/3
I just don’t enjoy low curve aggro very much.
Total: 10/18

Wintervoid’s Highway to Hell:
Effectiveness 3.5/5
It went 3-2 on the ladder for second place. Game recaps on page 6.
Build: 4.5/5
I was impressed by how disciplined this build was. I’m always too tempted to stuff as much etb value cards and flicker effects into these build types as possible and the necessary control gets squeezed out. This build hit a very good balance of value and control, making it versatile and resilient while still fun to play. I am tempted to see what would happen in you subbed Essence Flux for Harnessed Lightning tho...
Card Breakage: 2.5(+1)/5
Bonus point for using DCGs pick over SNS. The etb effects give good value, but the delayed return effect of LRH makes it a little awkward to use. This card is more of a tool than a build-around so “breaking” it in any creative way is almost impossible. DCGs idea of using it with processors would count, but good luck making a playable build around that interaction.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 3/3
I love these builds. That this one was so balanced made it especially fun to pilot.
Total: 14.5/18

Mowie's Recycled Servos:
Effectiveness: 1/5
It went 1-2 on the ladder tying for last place. Plus it needed a bonus round for its win so -0.5 It is a bit slow to get going and has lots of pieces that only work well with other pieces making it vulnerable to both control/disruption and fast aggro builds. Game recaps on Page 8.
Build: 2/5
These builds are the trickiest to get right. You need to balance the need for control, early presence, late power, and support for the synergies that you are trying to exploit. This deck is a little light on control - some sort of reset like Arrogance, Dusk, or Yahenni's could help to compensate for the slow starts. It also had an ambitious amount of land tech that made some of the double color drops difficult to hit on curve. That said, I'm a jank-junky and appreciate the willingness to put fun before competitiveness.
Card Breakage: 3/5
Lots of sac outlets to guarantee SNS triggers the deck's etb effects. But not as many etb effects to trigger.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 2.5/3
Hi, my name is Johnny and I'm a jankaholic...
Total: 8.5/18

Cucho's Rakdrazi:
Effectiveness: 4.5/5
It went 4-1 on the ladder, making it the undisputed champion for effectiveness. Game recaps on page 8.
Build: 5/5
It just felt perfectly tuned to me. Aggressive starts are balanced with late game power to ensure that it doesn't easily stall. Aggro is my least favorite play style but I can appreciate the beauty of it here. Good job!
Card Breakage: 2/5
Limit self sac ability (Hellion, and the Senior Nalaars) and limited etb value. SNS is still good here but mostly on it's general merits rather than because of a plethora of synergy to abuse.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 1.5/3
No jank and limited synergy, but such a well tuned machine.
Total: 13/18

Cardboard Nomad's Scrappy Stamina:
Effectiveness: 1.5/5
It also went 1-2 on the ladder, tying for last place. I believe it underperformed for me, bad shuffles and bad matchups - I'd expect it to win maybe 50-60% if I played a flat number of games instead of double elimination. Game recaps on page 8.
Build: 3.5/5
I think the build had some great ideas but also had some conflicting principles. It has the synergy of a madness deck with a set of discard outlets and a set of cards that you want to discard. It also has an extremely low to the ground curve and high threat/land ratio. The synergy makes it want to assemble mixes of both parts of the synergy formula, which can take time. The low curve makes it want to win very fast before opponents start out-powering it. With the right mix of cards, it can be devastatingly fast and effective. But the win fast/find synergy conflict and low land count make getting idea hands a little tricky. my second AI game would have rolled most decks because I hit the right mix of cards. But my ladder games weren't as lucky.
Card Breakage: 3.5/5
Amalgam is a great way to abuse SNS. Otherwise, there weren't a whole lot of etb value synergies and the card works mostly on it's own merits.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 1.5/3
I like the GY shenanigans but generally dislike low curve aggro.
Total: 10/18

bzzt's Long Road to...?:
Effectiveness: 2/5
It also went 2-2 on the ladder (granted I tossed it a free bonus round so -0.5), tying for 3rd place. While the mana was better, this deck suffered from the same issues as Mowie's - vulnerable to both control and fast builds. Game recaps on page 10.
Build: 2/5
It just didn't have enough interaction to support it. Dusk, Cataclysmic, and Arrogance are have limitations on how they affect the board state. I would probably cut either Dusk or Arrogance to make room for some early removal like Declaration and try to cut a few other cards to squeeze in Anguished Unmaking/Never and some other cheap spot removal.
Card Breakage: 4(+1)/5
Bonus point for using DCG's card pick. Like Mowie's build, you got the sac outlets to guarantee SNS triggers AND you have a good assortment of ETB value. Rallier especially is effective. I had one game vs AI where I swung into 2 blockers with Rallier and a Liberator, trading both creatures for their respective blockers. But SNS on Rallier meant that I got both my creeps back at full strength and was able to finish the AI the following turn. Fun! LRH also played well with the Revolt and etb.
Totally Subjective Fun Factor: 2.5/3
Did I mention I'm a Jankaholic?
Total: 11.5/18

BONUS POINTS!!! (because I can if I want and I want)
BestBuild goes to Cucho! +2
FunnestBuild goes to Wintervoid! +2
TooJank2Stank goes to Mowie and bzzt! +1 ea.
NotMyLuckyDay goes to Mowie and Nomad! +1 ea.
DoubleFeature goes to bzzt! +2

And thus my final scores are:
Josenshu: 10
Wintervoid: 16.5
Mowie666: 11
Cucho Lambreta: 15
CardboardNomad: 11
bzzt: 14.5

Normalized those would be:
Josenshu: 0
Wintervoid: 5
Mowie666: 1.5
Cucho Lambreta: 4
CardboardNomad: 1.5
bzzt: 3

I'm going to call it here since no one else seems to be judging. I'll tally the scores and announce the winner soon!

bzzt's Long Road to...?:
Barney - 0.5
Nomad - 0.0
bzzt - 1.0
Wintervoid - 1.5
Cucho - 4.0
Flaky - 3.0
Total: 10.0

Can it be? We have a tie! Congrats, Wintervoid and Cucho for winning Round 5. The fate of the next round now rests in your hands.

Edit: well... this is embarrassing. I mixed bzzt’s scores for Cucho and Nomad giving Cucho 2 points more than he had and tying him for the win. And while he could have played it smart and pretended not to notice, sparing me the shame of goofing up, he had to take the high road and point it out. Oh well... his loss. This is giving me flashbacks of when I put the best picture award for the Oscars in its envelop last year.
