So I was playing on the ladder with my Raff´s deck and then I got paired to one guy playing a creatureless deck with lich mastery, lots of removal, cycling and second sun FTW, It looked something like this:

2 x Lich's Mastery
3 x Second Sun

2 x Ritual of rejuvenation
2 x Renewed faith

2 x Moment of craving
4 x Vraska's contempt
4 x Seal away
4 x Cast out

2 x Arguel's Blood Fast
1 x Profane procession

2 x Settle the wreckage
2 x Golden Demise

3 x Karn Scion of Urza
2 x Gideon of the Trials

---
I think there is a deck here... what do you guys think of it?

Looks slow and tedious. If only there was a good drain-life spell... Necropotence would be back!
Maybe you could use that boros promo card that gives burn lifelink... Mana would be horrible, but it sure would be fun to lightning strike and ancestral recall all-in-one.

That´s about right... slow and tedious.
but that enchantment is not going to break his self.
-I just haven't faced one decent deck featuring that thing-
now that I remember a bit more it had a lot of duress and Doomfalls

Funny, I was brewing a deck like this last night. I would think he runs one more Lich’s Mastery, you really need one on the board to get this deck going. Also, Arguel’s blood fast becomes a liability when you put the Lich’s Mastery down (not that it really matters as long as you have life gain). When we get kaladesh you probably want to toss the full play set of fumigates.

I like a play set of renewed faith over ritual rejuvenation, early game you want that thing off your hand ASAP. 2 cmc vs 3 cmc is a big difference for a difference of 2 life and when the Lich is out you also get a 6 life + cards vs 4 life + 5 card differnce. Running both sets will get you run over by aggro and control already has the upper hand in the matchup. I actually like sunscourge champion here if you want to include creatures. I think 2 Second Sun is enough, with a Lich out it will draw itself back to your hand and you will burn through your deck either way. I like Treasure Map here too, helps dig up the combo or protection, can ramp and color fix that 3x for Lich, and can open up a potential contingency plan with Karn.

I have thought about this deck, and IMO, the biggest issue is mana. With a very low permanent count, every point of damage is most likely a loss of mana, while every point of lifegain is at most 1 extra mana per turn.

I would almost think the lich would work better in a Vamp lifegain deck. You have permanents to sacrifice if need be, and the weenie lifegain could keep your hand refilled. Not too high on this option, but seems to fit Lich better? I mean, burn becomes very effective land destruction, and about 20-30% of decks seem to have some sort of burn and/or way to damage besides creatures, so you will be losing permanents, and I don't think you want the loss to be land.

As long as there are enough cards in the graveyard you can exile those instead of permanents. The trick is burning through your deck.

Ah, thanks, I thought it was just permanents. That is what I get for not bringing up the card text.

I actually made an orzhov "blow sh|t up" deck that I was thinking of throwing the mastery in, but realized I didn't have enough lifegain in it. Although one of my win-cons is lyra...
Damn, Kalitas would be so nice in this meta.
Maybe some trespasser's curse tech could work... (useless against creatureless control though).

I took a crack at a Lich's Mastery deck and mostly got my ass kicked, it definetly needs some fixing. I think I forgot to add some Karns and I reckon golden demise is just too weak atm. I'll swap the demises for bontu's last reckoning or phyrexian scriptures (I like the exile graveyard bit). When you do get a mastery out, drawing sh|tloads of cards for every token you've got is fun. I guess an anointed procession could work, but it's not really this deck's thing, but maybe a sunscourge champion or 2... Any ideas?


Gideon's intervention is just lol against approach...

You know what card works here? Glorious end, if you got Lich's Mastery or Gideon of the Tials on board you can ignore the part where you lose the game ;)
I was defeated by one Mardu creatureless deck that used that and Aetherflux Reservoir to gain a bunch of life while dealing with the board... I guess it crumbles to control tho.

There seem to be some sweet lifegain cards in M19, I've been thinking about trying it out when the update comes.
Control doesn't have to be a problem because black has plenty of decent hand-hate. Problem is ballancing anti-control and anti-aggro, you end up having lots of dead cards...
I may try the mardu deck with those lifelinking Minotaur promo cards. Mostly black with some splashing, but it's probably jank-city-central.
Still fun to try and pull off a win with a janky combo.
