Welcome to the fifth season of Pro Tour: You Make the Card! This is your annual opportunity to put your fantasy fantasy card design skills to the test for a chance at internet immortality. Over the next several months, this competition will push you to be the best designer you can be to see which of you can join the ranks of YMTC legends.

Semifinalists

Pairings

Semifinals Criteria

Different cards appeal to different player demographics. An important aspect of card design is to understand what kinds of cards appeal to which players. To help with this, three generalized player demographics exist. We should be pretty familiar with these demographics, and they take many words to explain, so if you need to brush up, feel free to reread MaRo's article on Timmy, Johnny, and Spike.

Your task this round will be to design a card for each of them under specific criteria. These criteria are:

  • Timmy: Design a card with a number greater than or equal to 10 that would appeal to Timmy.
  • Johnny: Design a card that creates a mini-game that can be built around in such a way that would appeal to Johnny. An example of this kind of card is Warp World.
  • Spike: Design a card whose converted mana cost, power, toughness, and all numbers in its rules text are equal. This card should be designed for tournament play such that it appeals to Spike. Examples of this kind of card are Loxodon Hierarch and Anger of the Gods.

You have until Saturday, 11/17 at 15:00 Central to complete your submissions. At that point, I or one of the judges will post a separate thread for each pairing, where the community will vote for their preferred submission in each pairing.

Congratulations to all of you for making it to the semifinals, and good luck!

I didn't really think about it when I commented on the criteria, but does Warp World even constitute being called a mini-game? Unless the other two now-gone examples, it doesn't involve any decision making from the players.

Hmm, that's a fair point. But it leaves the outcome up to chance and deck building decisions, and the aftermath often results in a lot of choices. I think it's close enough to count.

To be fair, Goblin Game and Choice of Damnations, which were the other two cards I originally was going to include as examples, aren't impacted much by deck building decisions and therefore aren't very appealing to Johnny.

Enchantment (R)
Graft 1
At the beginning of your upkeep, if permanents you control have twenty or more +1/+1 counters among them, you win the game.
As Momir stared at the vial that held his experiment, he daydreamed that what started as the smallest microbe would eventually grow to cover the world.

Tamiyo, Aligner of Stars
Legendary Planeswalker — Tamiyo (M)
: Scry 3.
: If you've cast at least five spells this turn, of which one was a creature, another was an artifact, another was an enchantment, another was an instant, and another was a sorcery, you win the game.
: Draw seven cards.

Valorborne Gargoyle
Artifact Creature — Gargoyle (U)
Affinity for creatures
Flying, defender
As long as you control two or more other creatures, Valorborne Gargoyle can attack as though it didn't have defender.
For over a decade, it has held its watch through times of peace, ever yearning for the bells of war to signal the battle that would breathe life into its wings once more.

Menagerie Cage

Artifact (R)
When Menagerie Cage is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, create a 10/10 green Dinosaur creature token.
"Today's attraction arrives from the Golden City itself, a rare and fearsome beast never before seen in Luneau!" —Marcois Jean-Jaquent, Baron of the Menagerie

Dangerous Dilemma

Sorcery (R)
Look at the top two cards of your library, then exile one of them face up and the other face down. An opponent chooses one of them. Reveal the chosen card, then you may play it without paying its mana cost.
"Calamity or disaster. Take your pick."

Sever the Soul

Instant (R)
Exile target creature. Its controller creates a tapped 2/2 black Zombie creature token.
"Without our souls, what are we? Piles of meat, nothing more." —Lodin Farrus

:bump:

Also, a reminder that for each demographic, your card needs to both meet the criteria and fit the demographic. So your Timmy card needs to use a number equal to 10 or greater and be a Timmy card. Just using a number equal to 10 or greater is not enough.

Similarly, it's not enough for your Johnny card to be a build-around card. It also needs to be a minigame, which should involve participation from multiple players.

There are still two days to go. Good luck!

Identity: Male
Ancient Regisaur
Creature - Dinosaur (R)
Ascend (If you control ten or more permanents, you get the city's blessing for the rest of the game.)
When Ancient Regisaur enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you have the city's blessing.
Its scars serve as a warning: no creature reaches this age by accident.

Relentless Visions
Sorcery (R)
Starting with you, each player may draw a card and lose 1 life. Repeat this process until no one draws a card.
One by one members of the circle collapsed until only a single acolyte remained standing. His eyes gleamed with newfound knowledge, but his lips were pierced in pain.

Temporal Displacement
Instant (R)
Exile target creature with converted mana cost 2 or less and put two time counters on it. For as long as it remains exiled, at the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter from it. When the last counter is removed, return it to the battlefield under your control.
